The wonderful world of plants at Quarryhill lecture series

Quarryhill Botanical Garden

Saturday August 24th 2019 - 5:00pm to

Quarryhill Botanical Garden’s Peter H. Raven Lecture Series continues this summer with an Aug. 24 lecture featuring Matt Ritter, author and professor of Botany at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Ritter will discuss “California Plants” and take the audience on a visual tour and celebration of California’s iconic native flora. There are more than 5,000 native species in California – one in five of which are now rare or endangered, and their unique beauty at risk. Ritter will use photographs, insight, and humor to share the natural history of California’s fascinating plants.

Ritter studies California’s native plants and trees in the urban forest. He is the author of several books, including a new guide to California’s flora, California Plants: A Guide to our Iconic Flora and a humorous and best-selling guide to California’s urban forest, A Californian’s Guide to the Trees Among Us (Heyday, 2011). Ritter won the Cal Poly Excellence in Teaching Award and the International Society of Arboriculture Award for Excellence in Education. He’s an avid woodworker, mason, and gardener. For more on Ritter, go to mattritter.net.

Gates open at 5 p.m. on Aug. 24 and the lecture starts promptly at 5:30 and runs until 6:30 pm. The fee is $25 for Quarryhill members, $35 for non-members. Refreshments will be available for purchase. For more information go to quarryhillbg.org/summerspeakerseries.html.

The lecture series concludes on Saturday, Sept. 28, with Mary Ellen Hannibal speaking about “Searching for Heroes and Hope in an Age of Extinction.”

Quarryhill Botanical Garden is located at 12841 Sonoma Hwy. in Glen Ellen.
